Positionality Statement - Who are we?
Marta V. Martínez - I am the founder of Nuestras Raíces: The Latino Oral History Project of Rhode Island. Having worked on this project since 1991 has led me to become a Community Oral Historian. I have a Masters in Journalism, which I think offers structure in how I devise questions as a history collector and in how I guide those who have become history-tellers. With my journalistic training and listening skills, I hope to bring integrity to the project by assuring that the information I collect includes truth and facts, and that the stories are told by not just one person, but by a community as a whole. I do this by verifying what I am told by word of mouth and through memory with no less than three reliable primary sources. I am extremely cognizant of the fact that when one collects and shares the history of a community, of places, and events that are often quoted, referenced and republished. To that light, I am committed to ensuring that Rhode Island’s Latino history truly represents the truth in every way. The purpose of this collection is to make Latinos proud of their history, who they are and where they want to be. Collecting our history is incredibly important for me because we, as Latinos, rarely are given the opportunity to share our history and to tell our story. My hope is for the younger generations to learn about all the successes that Latino individuals have had in this country, and to understand the whole history of the Latino community, and how celebrating our diversity makes us stronger and keeps us united.
Soy la fundadora de Nuestras Raíces: El Proyecto Latino de Historia Oral de Rhode Island. El haber trabajado en este proyecto desde 1991 ahora soy conocida como Historiadora de la Comunidad Latina. Tengo una maestría en periodismo, que creo que ofrece una estructura en cómo concibo preguntas y en cómo guío a quienes se han convertido en narradores de su propia historia. Con mi formación periodística y mis habilidades para escuchar, espero aportar integridad al proyecto al asegurarme de que la información que recopilo incluya la verdad y los hechos, y que las historias sean contadas no solo por una persona, sino por una comunidad entera. Hago esto verificando lo que me dicen de boca en boca y de memoria con no menos de tres fuentes primarias confiables. Soy muy consciente del hecho de que cuando uno recopila y comparte la historia de una comunidad, de lugares, y eventos que a menudo se citan, se hace referencia a ellos y se vuelven a publicar. En ese sentido, me comprometo a asegurar que la historia latina de Rhode Island realmente represente la verdad en todos los sentidos. El propósito de esta colección es hacer que los latinos se sientan orgullosos de su historia, quiénes son y dónde quieren estar. Recopilar nuestra historia es increíblemente importante para mí porque nosotros, como latinos, rara vez tenemos la oportunidad de compartir nuestra historia y contar nuestra historia. Alyssa Trejo - My name is Alyssa Trejo (she/her/hers) from El Paso, Texas. I earned my undergraduate degree at Boston College, majoring in Art History and minoring in Managing for Social Impact and the Public Good. I am now a first-year master’s student in Public Humanities at Brown University. I am the daughter and granddaughter of Mexican immigrants. My past research interests focus mainly on Mexican art history, the history of the U.S.-Mexico border, and the impact of nonprofit work and social entrepreneurship. My recent exposure to archiving through the Public Humanities program along with past experience with museum collections helped inform my work with Rhode Island Latino Arts. I am not an expert archivist, nor do I have previous professional experience in library sciences.
Mi nombre es Alyssa Trejo (she/ella) de El Paso, Texas. Obtuve mi licenciatura en Boston College, con especialización en Historia del Arte y especialización en Gestión para el Impacto Social y el Bien Público. Ahora soy un estudiante de primer año de maestría en Humanidades Públicas en la Universidad de Brown. Soy hija y nieta de inmigrantes mexicanos. Mis intereses de investigación anteriores se centran principalmente en la historia del arte mexicano, la historia de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México y el impacto del trabajo sin fines de lucro y el emprendimiento social. Mi reciente exposición al archivo a través del programa de Humanidades Públicas, junto con la experiencia pasada con colecciones de museos, ayudó a informar mi trabajo con Rhode Island Latino Arts. No soy un archivero experto ni tengo experiencia profesional previa en bibliotecología.
Yaruska Ordinola - My name is Yaruska Ordinola (she/her/hers). I was born and raised in Lima, Peru until the age of eight, which is when my family and I moved to the United States. I attended public school in Providence, Rhode Island; I earned my bachelor's degree from the University of Rhode Island and graduated with a bachelor's of science in Psychology and a bachelor's of arts in anthropology. Community is essential in my work in the non-profit sector, and in my pursuit of a career in public health. I became involved with Rhode Island Latino Arts hoping to contribute to the conservation of the rich Latinx history in Rhode Island. Working with the archives taught me how important the conservation of culture is for our communities. I will continue to advocate for my community as I pursue a master's of Public Health at Brown University this Fall.
Mi nombre es Yaruska Ordinola (she/ella). Nací y crecí en Lima, Perú hasta los ocho años, que es cuando mi familia y yo nos mudamos a los Estados Unidos. Fui a una escuela pública en Providence, Rhode Island; Obtuve mi licenciatura en la Universidad de Rhode Island y me gradué con una licenciatura en ciencias en psicología y una licenciatura en antropología. La comunidad es esencial en mi trabajo en el sector sin fines de lucro y en mi búsqueda de una carrera en salud pública. Me involucré con Rhode Island Latino Arts con la esperanza de contribuir a la conservación de la rica historia Latinx en Rhode Island. Trabajar con los archivos me enseñó lo importante que es la conservación de la cultura para nuestras comunidades. Continuaré abogando por mi comunidad mientras persigo una maestría en Salud Pública en la Universidad de Brown este otoño.
